School Participation

Requirements:

  1. After determining that your school seeks to do a fundraising Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon, please contact us at Readathon@cuedspeech.org (if you haven’t already done so) in order that we may assist you.
  2. Introduce the Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon to your students. Let them know how their reading efforts will improve their reading skills, while also helping their school raise funds for educational activities, and support deaf literacy.
  3. Help students set defined, reachable goals based on their age (or grade level). Download the Teacher's Letter.
  4. Have students bring home: the Parent’s Letter, the Student’s Letter, Pledge Sheet, and Calendar Tally Sheet.
  5. The students will begin to read and collect pledges for every minute or every page they read (or are read to).
  6. During the Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon, teachers should help students track their performance on the Calendar Tally Sheet, and encourage them to meet their reading goals.
  7. Students read for the duration of the Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon (all of October, 2010).
  8. At the end of the Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon, students collect their pledges and return their money to their teacher, who then takes the money to the Principal’s Office.
  9. Checks from sponsors should be made payable to the school, which will then issue a single check to NCSA.
