Q: When does the Read-a-thon take place?
A: October 1 – 31, 2010.
Q: What does my child do for the Read-a-thon?
A: Solicit sponsors, read and track their time spent reading. Use the Pledge Sheet to solicit sponsors. Use the Calendar Tally Sheet to track time spent reading.
Q: My child cannot read yet on their own, can they still participate?
A: Yes! Parents, guardians, siblings and other family members may read aloud to your child. This reading time counts toward minutes read.
Q: What "counts" for reading?
A: Any time your child spends reading outside of school from October 1 – 31, 2010. This includes individual reading time and being read to aloud.
Q: Do I need special forms for the Read-a-thon?
A: Yes! A packet of information forms and envelope for collecting donations will be sent home in your child’s back-pack during the last couple of weeks of September. You can also download the forms from the forms page.
Q: Who should my child ask to be a sponsor?
A: Sponsors can be parents, relatives, neighbors, etc. Children should not solicit pledges from people they do not know.
Q: How much money should a sponsor donate?
A: A typical pledge may be $.02 or $.03 per minute, or a one-time pledge of a set amount.
Q: When should sponsors pay?
A: Money should be collected after the Read-a-thon ends October 31, 2010. Checks should be written to your child’s school. Cancelled checks can serve as a tax-deductible donation receipt.
Q: Who is responsible for collecting the sponsorship donations?
A: You and your child are responsible for collecting sponsor donations.
Q: What do we do with the forms when the Read-a-thon ends?
A: The Calendar Tally Sheet, Pledge Sheet, and collected money must be placed in a Read-a-thon envelope and returned to the classroom’s teacher during the week of November 2 -6, 2010.
