I was blessed with parents that loved reading, which helped shape me into the writer (and reader) I am today. Literacy for all hearing impaired children is crucial in instilling freedom, confidence and a lifelong love of language and words.

Learning to read and write English is important for all children, but most especially for deaf youngsters. Being able to communicate easily in the universal language that English has become will give a deaf child a real advantage in the academic and business worlds over a hearing counterpart with lesser writing skills. For this reason I wholeheartedly endorse the Read-a-thon program.

Inspiring a love of reading is the greatest gift we can give to a
deaf child. Literacy is the strong foundation that allows their education
to be built on safe ground, reaching toward new heights.
