Literacy Counts Background

Give Literacy a Hand Read-a-thon is a program sponsored by the National Cued Speech Association. Its goals are:

  • To raise awareness about deafness, Cued Speech and literacy
  • To encourage children to read books and develop their literacy skills
  • To partner with schools to help them raise funds for educational purposes
  • To provide schools with an opportunity to participate in a community service program
  • To raise funds to support deaf literacy for the NCSA
The NCSA is a Bethesda-based, nationally recognized nonprofit 501(c) (3) dedicated to promoting communication, language development and literacy among children who are deaf using Cued Speech. Cued Speech is a mode of communication that uses the mouth and hand to visually distinguish the phonemes of a spoken language. In essence, Cued Speech provides a complete visual representation of spoken language. (Although Cued Speech was developed with the deaf in mind, preliminary research is proving that it is an effective tool for children with other communication disorders.)
